GREENSAND COUNTRY LANDSCAPE PARTNERSHIP SEEKS COMMUNICATIONS, MARKETING & ENGAGEMENT OFFICER

WE ARE SEEKING A PASSIONATE, HIGHLY MOTIVATED AND EXPERIENCED COMMUNICATIONS, MARKETING AND ENGAGEMENT OFFICER, TO HELP US DELIVER A LANDSCAPE PARTNERSHIP FOR GREENSAND COUNTRY, A DISTINCTIVE LANDSCAPE AREA CONSISTING OF A SANDSTONE RIDGE AND ASSOCIATED RIVER VALLEYS, LOCATED PRINCIPALLY IN CENTRAL BEDFORDSHIRE.

BRCC and the Greensand Trust are leading on this Landscape Partnership programme with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, which will deliver an array of exciting projects to help us raise awareness of the heritage value of Greensand Country and to reverse the gradual decline in the distinct landscape character of this beautiful and loved place.

We have created a destination brand for the Greensand Country.  Be at the heart of this exciting initiative and help us to create a living and working landscape that is cherished by present and future generations and a rich natural and built heritage which is sustained and understood.

Great For-

Reasonably Fit Walkers– One of our longer walks, although fairly flat throughout
Picturesque Cottages and Villages– the walk goes through three of the Greensand Country’s prettiest estate villages with lots of other fascinating buildings on the way

A Railway Ramble from Bow Brickhill to Woburn Sands

– Starts at Bow Brickhill station and finishes at Woburn Sands station

Distance

– 4 1/2 miles, including the big loop on the map

Great For-

A Car Free Day Out– The walk starts and finishes on the Marston Vale line, easily accessed from either Bedford station (we started at St Johns) and with one change from Milton Keynes and Leighton Buzzard

Landscape & History- lots of things to look for in the woodlands including an Iron Age Hill fort and ancient parish boundaries marked by huge trees and banks

Navigators– It’d be hard to get completely lost in the woods as they aren’t that big but easy to get turned around and paths aren’t well waymarked so OS map 192 is handy!

A Short Walk at Sandy Smith

Military History- Passes through the site of the Chicksands ‘Elephant Cage’ antenna

Wildlife– some nice birds of prey over the Sandy Smith reserve. Lots of wildflowers if you do this walk in the spring.

Town and Country- Gorgeous country cottages and Georgian architecture in Ampthill

Parks and Playground- Lots of safe open space in the park and a playground for the kids

Heaths and Meadows at Maulden

– about 3 hours, although I spent a lot of time taking detours. Could easily do this in 2 hours of steady walking

Great For-

Views- Another top of the ridge walk with great views off to the Chilterns, lots of lovely open meadows and fields throughout the walk

Heathland- A chance to see some of the work that goes into restoring a heather heathland, and how it looks mid-restoration

Reptiles at Rammamere

Views– This is one of the highest points on the Greensand Ridge with amazing views into Greensand Country and north over Marston Vale
History– The walk starts at the ruins of Houghton House
Wildlife- Lots of wildflower meadows, butterflies and dragonflies

Shuttleworth’s Swiss Garden

Great For-

Families– Easy walking, lots to see in a short walk, family activity trails and quizzes as well
Gardeners– Wonderful restored Victorian gardens with follies, rockeries, beds and borders and a fern grotto
Artists- Sculpture trail, art exhibitions in some of the buildings

Woburn Adventure

History– walking through historic parkland with views of Woburn Abbey and Milton Bryan church
